forfeited on the 25th. May, 1916. The Shipping Company concerned, the Osaka Shosen Kaisha, appeared and consented.

Case No. 4.

10 cases of eggs ex "Choy Sang", consimed by Hencarini & Co., Shanghai, to (8) N.T.Hashim & Co., Manila. The perishable nature of the cargo, which was deteriorating, necessitated some prompt action in the interests of all parties, as the onses could not be allowed to go forward, Mencarini & Co. were communicated witłu by telegram. The goods were forfeited under Ordinance No. 22 of 1915, on the 10th. June, 1916. The proceeds were subsequently paid to Mencarini & Co. and accepted by them.

Case No. 5.

52 cases of Wood Ter, consigned to order but know to be from Bergmann & Co. Yokohama, to (S) Carl Schlieper & Co., Somarang, removed from "Hokuto Maru" with the consent of the Japanese Consul- -General. This was forfeited on the 16th, June, 1916, after notice

to the shipping ngents. In this case, through a misapprehension, the notice wa rather too short, but no claim has ever been

received.

9.

Two cases where the section was not applied are added by way u

of illustration.

Illustration 1.

None of these names were on the Statutory List but in- -tercepted letters showed that the real shippers were (8) Bergmann & Co. and that Kunanan knew it. The Government were asked to authorise an application for forfeiture. I minuted on 20th. Novemb-

-er, 1916:-

*It might be forfeited. .It is probably still the property

of Bergmann & Co., and we could prosecute the mater of the ship, and in case of somviction the goods might
